Our good friend and Philly native Monroe Martin has been given a great opportunity by one of the most famous comedy clubs in the country to headline his own night. Caroline’s comedy club in New York, known for booking the biggest names in comedy, has taken notice in Monroe’s comedy and given him his own Breakout Artist night, where he gets to book and headline his own show.
Monroe was given this opportunity after being noticed by the club’s staff at a comedy competition. Not only will Monroe be headlining the show, but he was able to bring along some other Philly comics for the opening acts which include comedians Derrek Gaines and Chris Cotton.
You can buy tickets to the show here.
We’re very aware that Caroline’s is in Manhattan, but a show like this merits the commute to go see it.
Those of you follow Monroe Martin on twitter will be able to get special promotional codes to get discounted tickets a week before the show.
You can also visit MonroeMartinComedy.com for news on Monroe’s other upcoming shows, sketches, and stand-up videos.
Enjoy the following video of Monroe’s stand-up:
Fred Armisen, who up until this season was a cast member of Saturday Night Live and currently the star of the popular sketch show Portlandia will be performing at the Electric Factory on Thursday, November 14th at 8:30 PM. I’m not completely sure if he will be doing stand-up or sketch comedy on his visit to Philly (may both?), but what is known is that his trademark character, british punk-rock legend Ian Rubbish, will be the opening act.
Armisen has gained a solid following through his characters on “SNL” and Portlandia as well as his music projects with Cris of Conformity. I just hope that he’ll bring some of his famous “SNL” characters to the stage.
You can purchase tickets to Fred Armisen at the Electric Factory here.
Visit Fred Armisen’s Website here.

If you’re like me, you’ve already been notified by your personalized artist tracker on Live Nation’s website that Bill Burr will be performing at the Tower Theater in Upper Darby on Saturday, November 9th at 8 PM.
If you’re like me even more, you’d know that Bill’s relationship with Philadelphia has been nothing but an exemplification of gentlemanly respect and mutual admiration.
At this point in the post I would imagine your eyeballs have rolled back into your skull as scenes from “The Incident” flash into your memory. I’ve already posted the video to it plenty of times on this site so just go look it up on you tube.
Anyway, I’ve already looked up the chart of available seats and can already see that tickets are going fast. If you haven’t already, I’d suggest that you do that soon at this link.
On a completely different subject, this is just a side note that tonight will be Center City Comedy’s last showcase at the Raven Lounge. This showcase has been running for 5 years and has been a popular room for comedians to work on material or even start doing stand-up. If you could, please stop by tonight at 9 at 1718 Sansom Street. Check out the following post for more info.
Ok, so it may not be smack-dab in the middle of Philadelphia, but it’s still a valid place for comedians and comedy fans to go watch a show and get stage time.
Comedian and co-owner of Soul Joel productions Joel Richardson was nice enough to let me in on his newest comedy project that will be a consistent room at the Valley Forge casino, right outside King of Prussia mall.
The show is tonight and will have host Matt Scarpelli, featured comic Pat House, and headliner Joey Gay.
Joel Richardson was also nice enough to offer us two free tickets to give out every week for their shows. All you have to do is mention the #DeucesWildComedy tag to us on twitter @PhillyComedy and a winner will be picked at random every week.
Philly is in desperate need of more comedy venues and I think that it’s great that the guys over at Soul Joel productions were able to pull this off.
You can check out the flyer for the show below or visit souljoelproductions.com for more info on their upcoming shows and new venue.
Be sure to follow @SoulJoel on twitter.
All summer long at Helium Comedy Club
If you’re from out of town or need a reason to see why the comedy scene in our city is so good, I recommend you get yourself a ticket to the “Philly’s Phunniest” comedy competition.
I write about this event every year, but for those who don’t know what this is, it’s an elimination-round type comedy competition, with only the funniest comics of each round who get to advance their way to the finals where, where the grand prize winner is given regular gigs, promotion in the local media, and bragging rights to validate their hard work as comics.
The next round of this competition is Monday, August 5th, at Helium Comedy Club, 2031 Sansom street. The show starts at 8 PM.
Helium is offering a two-for-one ticket deal for those who call 215-496-9001 beforehand and mention the name of the comic they know. So here’s a list of the line-up that will be happening for each show during the course of the competition.
No mentioning comics you don’t know, guys! (Wink)
As always, I will be giving a “featured comedian” article to the 1st place winner of the competition. You can read an article by last year’s winner James Hesky after he won here.
I always tell newcomers to the comedy scene in Philly that the best place to start watching or performing live comedy is the Raven Lounge open mic on Thursdays at 9. The Center City Comedy group is responsible for that.
Center City Comedy (from left), H. Foley, Tom Cassidy, and Chris Cotton
But, like most comics who want to further their comedy careers (or end them), a majority of the CCC group moved up to New York, leaving us with the weekly comedy party that they started. From there, some of them have started other rooms and gained some momentum in NYC.
I couldn’t tell you WHY they’ve decided to come back to Philadelphia to produce a new comedy show, but whoever’s idea it was, I’m sure it wasn’t an easy sell to the other guys in CCC.
What I’m assuming H. Foley said…
Regardless of the reason as to why, let’s just focus on how good it is to have more comedy from these guys in Philly. Needless to say that these guys know what they’re doing in terms of show production and obviously funny as shit.
If you didn’t read the flyer for the show above, THE SHOW WILL HAPPEN ON FRIDAY, AUGUST 2nd @ 9 PM and the TEN-SIX Club, 1709 Walnut street!!!
I’ll just take this moment to explain that this isn’t a joke or another attempt by myself to “RickRoll” you (although this would totally be the way to do it). You sit down yet? Good.
So this is obviously some awesome news. I’m sure most of you will agree when I say that I’ve wanted to see Dave Chappelle live more than anything else. The icing on the cake? New Zealand/HBO’s own Flight Of The Conchords will be co-headlining the show. Both acts haven’t been in the mainstream circuit for quite some time after their shows ceased production and both are fucking awesome, funny, etc.
This show is produced by Funny or Die, the popular comedy website/production company responsible for shows/viral videos such as Drunk History on Comedy Central and Funny or Die Presents: on HBO.
It goes without saying that I’ll be there. It would be redundant to type down all of the show’s info that you need, but just look at the picture up top.
Tickets are available on Ticketmaster.com and LiveNation.com with various dates. There’s also a date in Holmdale, NJ that you can go to if tickets sell out for the Camden date.
When I find a reputable site that will sell single tickets at a reasonable price, I’ll be sure to update this post. Feel free to post anything you find in the “comment” thread of this post.
As short of a notice as it is, I try to make free tickets available to our readers as much as possible. That’s why I’m reposting this offer from Helium Comedy club that I saw on facebook.
If you’d like to get free tickets to see comedian Mitch Fatel tonight, simply follow this link and answer the questions posted for your chance at some free tickets!
Thanks to Chris Cotton for sending me this: This show will be on May 14th at Helium Comedy Club and it features one of my all-time favorite comedians, Talent. If you haven’t seen Talent before, this would be a perfect opportunity to see him.
I put this show together, to raise money for Raven Lounge MS Bike Team and MS Research. Fighting against this disease is pretty important to me due to the fact my mother has be fighting this disease for over 30 years.
Four of the funniest comedians around lend their talents to a city wide fundraiser for Multiple Sclerosis for six weeks, ending with this May 14th
performance. Comedians Talent Harris (Def Jam, Host of Apollo), Mike Vecchione (Tonight
Show), Greer Barnes (Chappelle Show, Comedy Central), Jermaine Fowler (MTV 2′s Guy Code) and host Chris Cotton (Eric Andre Live Show) will share the stage, using their voices to fight for those afflicted with MS.
Take advantage of this opportunity to see five outstanding comedians for the price of one while supporting a worthy cause! A portion of the proceeds will go to the Raven Lounge Bike MS team and the National MS Society. For more details on the show or how to donate, please visit the following links:
